Culture and arts

1 min read

The Brooklyn Museum on Eastern Parkway is a major art museum; BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), founded in 1861, anchors the Fort Greene cultural district; and galleries, studios and large-scale street art fill Bushwick, Williamsburg, DUMBO and beyond.

Beyond the big institutions, Brooklyn’s culture lives in small places: independent theatres and cinemas, music clubs, poetry readings, community art centres and open studios. Neighbourhood-focused organisations such as Weeksville Heritage Center, the Brooklyn Historical Society and local libraries run exhibitions and talks, many of them free.

In summer, free outdoor concerts and film screenings take place in Prospect Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park and neighbourhood parks, and the West Indian American Day Carnival, the Mermaid Parade on Coney Island and the many street festivals show the borough’s cultural range. Check the Agenda page for dates.
