Last updated: Sunday, November 8. This policy explains what information Brooklyn.town (brooklyn.town) collects, why, and the choices you have.
1. About this template
This document is a general template prepared for Brooklyn.town. It is not legal advice and should be reviewed and adapted by a licensed attorney before the site launches.
2. Who is responsible
Brooklyn.town is published by Metrosolus (https://metrosolus.com), which decides how and why personal information is used on the site.
Contact for privacy questions and requests: contact@brooklyn.town, or by mail at the address given on our Contact page.
3. What we collect
We collect only what we need, depending on how you use the site:
• Feedback and complaints: your message and, only if you choose, your name and contact details.
• Lost & Found, gigs, classifieds and housing ads: the text of your notice, photos, a location at neighborhood level, and the contact details you choose to show or give us for follow-up.
• Jobs and candidates: job posts, applications and, for candidates, the profile or CV information you enter (such as work history, skills, education and contact details).
• Business listings and quote requests: business name, contact person, contact details and request details.
• Technical data: IP address, browser and device type, pages visited, dates and times, and cookies or similar technology needed for the site to work.
4. Anonymous feedback
You can send feedback or a complaint anonymously. In that case we do not ask for your name or contact details, and we do not try to find out who you are. Without contact details we also cannot reply to you.
Anonymous does not mean untraceable: our servers may keep technical logs, such as your IP address and browser details, for security and abuse prevention for a limited time [90 days]. We do not use these logs to build profiles about you.
If you give your identity, we never publish it without your consent. Please be aware that a court order, subpoena or other valid legal process can compel us to disclose information we hold.
5. How we use information
We use personal information to:
• review (moderate) and publish submissions, and contact you about them;
• run the candidate database and connect candidates with employers, as described below;
• respond to feedback, listing requests and quote requests;
• keep the site secure, prevent spam, fraud and abuse, and meet legal obligations;
• send newsletters and marketing, but only with your separate consent.
6. Your choices: marketing and candidate sharing
Marketing and candidate sharing are optional. Each needs your separate, explicit opt-in (for example an unticked box), and neither is ever a condition of posting or applying.
Newsletters and marketing: if you opt in, we may email you news, offers and updates from Brooklyn.town and Metrosolus. Every message includes an unsubscribe link, and we honor opt-outs promptly, as the CAN-SPAM Act requires. You can also write to contact@brooklyn.town.
Candidate profiles: if you opt in, we may share your profile with employers who request candidates. Employers receive only what you agreed to share. Once an employer has your details, it may keep them under its own policies, which we do not control. You can withdraw your consent and delete your profile at any time; this cannot undo sharing that already happened.
7. Who we share information with
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
We share information only with: service providers that help us run the site (such as hosting, email delivery, analytics and anti-spam), under confidentiality obligations; employers, when you have opted in; and authorities or other parties when the law requires it, to protect rights and safety, or in a business transfer such as a merger, with notice where possible.
Anything you choose to publish (for example a gig ad or a public contact detail) is visible to everyone and may be copied by others or indexed by search engines. Please publish only what you are comfortable making public.
8. Photos
Photos you upload must follow our Posting & Community Rules: you own them or have the right to share them, they show no faces of minors, and they contain no sensitive data such as IDs, cards or documents. We automatically strip EXIF metadata, such as GPS location and camera details, from uploaded images.
Please also check that the picture itself does not reveal your home address, license plate or other private details.
9. Cookies and analytics
We use essential cookies for language choice, security and form protection. We may use basic, privacy-conscious analytics to understand how the site is used. Where the law requires it, we ask for your consent before using non-essential cookies.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, but some features may then stop working.
10. How long we keep information
We keep information only as long as needed. These default periods may be adjusted:
• Feedback and complaints: [12 months] after the case is closed;
• Lost & Found, gigs, classifieds and housing ads: until the ad expires or you remove it, plus [30 days] in backups;
• Job posts, business listings and quote requests: [12 months] after they expire or close;
• Candidate profiles: [24 months] after your last activity, or until you delete them;
• Newsletter subscribers: until you unsubscribe, then a minimal suppression record so that we can honor your choice;
• Technical logs (such as IP address): [90 days];
• Longer periods may apply where the law requires us to keep records.
11. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical and physical safeguards in line with the New York SHIELD Act, such as encrypted connections (HTTPS), access controls and limited staff access. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
If a breach affects your private information, we will notify you and the authorities as required by New York law.
12. Your rights
You may ask to access, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you, or to withdraw a consent, by writing to contact@brooklyn.town. We may need to verify your identity first.
California residents: under the CCPA/CPRA you may ask to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose; to delete or correct it; to opt out of the sale or sharing of your information (we do not sell or share it); and not to be treated unfairly for exercising these rights. An authorized agent may submit a request for you. We respond within the legal time limits, generally 45 days.
Residents of other states and countries may have similar rights under local law. Write to us and we will do our best to help.
13. Children, changes and contact
Brooklyn.town is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information (COPPA). Posting and submitting personal data require users to be 18 or older. If you believe a child has given us information, write to contact@brooklyn.town and we will delete it.
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows the latest version, and we will post a notice for important changes.
