Who to call

1 min read

In an emergency, call 911 for police, fire or medical help. For problems that are not emergencies, such as noise, a broken street light, a pothole, heat or hot water complaints in your building or an abandoned vehicle, call 311 or use the 311 app or website, which are available in many languages.

Every neighbourhood is covered by a police precinct, and the New York City Police Department publishes crime statistics by precinct and neighbourhood on its website and on NYC Open Data. The department’s Neighborhood Coordination Officers hold community meetings where residents can raise local concerns.

Numbers on their own can mislead. A single incident can change a small area’s statistics, and reporting patterns differ, so compare several years and look at the trends in your own precinct rather than relying on rankings from apps and websites.
