Ferries, commuter rail and bridges

2 min read

The NYC Ferry runs on the East River, connecting Brooklyn waterfront landings such as Williamsburg, Greenpoint, DUMBO, Brooklyn Navy Yard and Atlantic Avenue with Manhattan, Queens and other stops, and its southern routes serve Red Hook, Sunset Park and Bay Ridge. A ride is a scenic and relaxed alternative to the subway; check ferry.nyc for current routes and fares.

The Long Island Rail Road’s Atlantic Terminal, beside Barclays Center, offers fast trains to Jamaica Station in Queens, where you can change for Long Island and for the AirTrain to JFK Airport. A few other LIRR stations, such as Nostrand Avenue and East New York, also serve Brooklyn.

Brooklyn is linked to Manhattan by the Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges and by the Brooklyn–Battery Tunnel, and to Staten Island by the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. The Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges all have pedestrian and bike paths, and walking the Brooklyn Bridge is one of the city’s classic experiences.
