The subway is the backbone of Brooklyn transport, and it runs around the clock. Most of the borough’s neighbourhoods have a station within a short walk, and the A, C, F, G, J, L, M, N, Q, R and Z lines and the 2, 3, 4 and 5 trains connect Brooklyn with Manhattan and with each other. The B and D run through parts of the borough too, and the S shuttle links Franklin Avenue with Prospect Park.
You can pay with a tap of a contactless card, phone or OMNY card at turnstiles and bus readers, and the fare system caps some weekly costs, so check mta.info for the current rules and prices. Transfers between subway and bus are included within a set time window.
Buses fill the gaps between subway lines and are often the best way to cross the borough east to west. Some routes, such as the B44 along Nostrand Avenue, run as Select Bus Service, with off-board payment and fewer stops. Weekend and overnight service changes are common; use the MTA app or a trip planner and look for service alerts.
Not every station has an elevator, so if you travel with a wheelchair, a stroller or heavy luggage, check the list of accessible stations before you plan a route. The MTA also operates Access-A-Ride for eligible customers.
