Health care and education are among the largest employers, with major hospitals such as NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn in Sunset Park, Maimonides Medical Center in Borough Park, The Brooklyn Hospital Center in Downtown Brooklyn, Kings County Hospital and SUNY Downstate in East Flatbush, and Brookdale and Woodhull hospitals, along with the public schools and universities.
Industrial and creative work has moved into the old waterfront buildings. The Brooklyn Navy Yard hosts hundreds of manufacturers, design studios and film production companies; the Brooklyn Army Terminal and Industry City in Sunset Park host light manufacturers, food producers and start-ups; and Downtown Brooklyn’s MetroTech area has technology and media offices.
Retail, hospitality, construction, transport and personal services employ many residents, and a large share of Brooklyn workers run their own small businesses or work as freelancers. Many residents commute to Manhattan, but a growing number work in the borough itself.
